What's Blooming :

If you are taking a stroll in the Rhododendron Garden this time of year there are several blooming shrubs not to be missed. One is the yellow flowering Mahonia ‘charity’(a variety commonly known as the Oregon grape) on the southeastern slope of the Garden. There are numerous varieties of Mahonia in the Garden and this one blooms between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

If you enter the Garden through the main entrance and go half way around that upper circle, look for the small pink-white, fragant flowers on the Viburnum bodnantense. This deciduous shrub flowers between October and April.

When walking in the forest, note that the winter Licorice Ferns are taking up residence. These drought-dormant ferns come alive when the rains start. They add a lively presence to the winter woods.
